The Big Blue Wrecking crew lived up to their reputation by forcing six turnovers in the Class 2A Division I playoff game Saturday in El Campo. The defense and the special teams set up the first four touchdowns for the Longhorns and they made it look easy.

The Hitchcock Bulldogs finished the year with a 5-6 record but they stayed close to the Longhorns until the third quarter. Hitchcock’s Devante Provost’s touchdown run pulled the Bulldogs within 28-20 just 1:04 into the second half. Undaunted the Longhorns scored twice in just under a minute to teach the Bulldogs how it should be done.

Joseph Lopez returned the opening kickoff 39-yards to the Hitchcock 41 and then scored from 11-yards out after seven plays to put the first 6 points of what would be 57 total points before the Longhorns were done.

Punter Zane Schorp put the Hitchcock team in a bind when he booted a 54-yard punt that placed them on their own 2-yard line. Rocha make an impressive interception to set up Shannon Taylor’s 5-yard run early in the second quarter. That score put the Longhorns back into the lead 12-7.

Cayleb Holt scored next on a 50-yard run and then ran in the conversion. The Longhorn lead increased to 20-7. Hitchcock then scored on a 63-yard pass and Tanner kicked the point after to put the score 20-14. With just little more that two minutes left in the half, Taylor scored and Gamez made the conversion to bring the score 28-14. Gamez made a big defensive play with 26 seconds left in the half when he picked off a Tuck pass at the George West 2-yard line.

Longhorn quarterback Albert Gamez scored after seven plays on a 7-yard run that began with a Hitchcock errant punt. A few plays later Dylan White caused a Hitchcock fumble that Riley Rocha recovered for the Longhorns. With only 46-yards to the endzone, Joseph Lopez broke loose and took the ball in for the score.

In 59 seconds the score went from 28-20 to 43-20. The Hitchcock team would only score one more time.

George West put the game away and took that next step to the state quarterfinals when Gamez scored on a 1-yard run and then Taylor scored on a 1 yard run that was set up by White’s fumble recovery at the Hitchcock 4 yard line.

To recap, George West Longhorn scoring in the first quarter was Lopez on an 11-yard. Second quarter Taylor on a 5-yard run, and Cayleb Holt on the 50-yard run and then Holt added 2 on the conversion run. Taylor scored again on a 1-yard run and Gamez added 2-points on the conversion run. Third quarter Gamez scored on a 7-yard run and Ty Jimmerson kicked the extra point. Lopez scored again on a 46-yard run followed by Gamez adding the conversion run. Fourth quarter Gamez with a 1-yard run and then a Jimmerson PAT.
