The Coastal Bend College campus is usually pretty much abandoned on Sundays.

However, anyone who ventured to the parking lot on the east side of the campus on Oct. 25 probably was shocked to see what looked like a scene out of “Cops” on cable television.

Special weapons and tactics team officers from the Bee County Sheriff’s Office, Beeville Police Department and Precinct 3 constable’s office were practicing vehicle assaults, school bus rescues and building clearing.

Lt. Richard Cantu of the BPD said the teams were there from about 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. running through various exercises.

In all, nine law enforcement types took part in the exercises, along with a number of volunteers.

“The reason three agencies trained together is because we often work together to fight narcotics problems, gang problems and others,” Cantu said.

SWAT officers usually join with investigators in serving arrest warrants and raiding suspected narcotics dealers’ residences.

Local SWAT officers also work with federal and state agencies in conducting arrest and search warrant raids on the homes of suspected fugitives and gang members.

Cantu said the best way to avoid mistakes and mishaps during those raids is to practice conducting them with the same officers that will be joining them in the real events.
