The Auxiliary of Swinney Switch held an open house of the Jarrett School Community Center on Saturday, Nov. 21. The open house was a lively celebration with music and conversation about the old school house.

Many of the former students and their family members came by and shared stories. Daniel Jones, Joe Simonson and Mr. Gaiton played guitars and sang. Although it had rain the days preceding the open house, the weather was beautiful on Saturday. The high point of the open house was the raffle drawing by Anysa Gaiton and Samantha Lansford. The Lucky winners were the following: First place – Jay Elminston (3 Miniature Gold Coins); Second place – Mike Chapa (Guided Wild Hog Hunt); Third place – Jeanene Jones (Hand Made US Flag Wall Hanging); Fourth place – Michael Sellars (1901 Morgan Silver Dollar); Fifth place – Clark Erhlich (Egyptian Table Cloth); and Sixth place – Ninfa Garcia ( Hand Made Lap Robe).

Through the raffle and donations the Auxiliary has enough money to start the reroofing project on the school house. The roofing project is estimated to cost approximately $4,000. The Auxiliary will begin fund raising for the new doors and replacement windows. The replacement cost of each of the 6 windows requiring repair is estimated to be $900 each for a total of $5,400.

According to Terese Simonson “We have a group that will donate the doors. We have had a lot of community support so far. Arturo Gaiton and his brother volunteered their bulldozer service and did a great job cleaning up the lot. Bob Scott came out and repaired the floors for the open house. Jimmie Jones burned off the brush piles. We have had so many members of the community working together on this project.”

The open house was a great success thanks to the hard work of a number of people. Everyone felt that it was well worth it to spend such a glorious Saturday afternoon outside exploring the school and school grounds.
