Pedro Hilario Palacios, 70, and passenger Lilia Nelda Palacios, 68, both of San Antonio, were pronounced dead at 6:24 p.m. at the crash scene by JP 1 Jimmy Rayes of McMullen County, according to DPS spokesmen.
Palacios was driving a 2006 Dodge 1500 Mega Cab, referred to as “vehicle two,” according to DPS authorities. Palacios was traveling northbound on the right lane, DPS officials said. “Vehicle two [driven by Palacios], possibly due to fatigue, traveled off the roadway, to the right into the bar ditch,” DPS authorities said. “The driver of vehicle two took faulty evasive action by steering to the left, causing vehicle two to veer across the roadway to the left and into the path of [another] vehicle.”
The other vehicle, referred to as “vehicle one,” was a 2007 Dodge 3500 Dually driven by Kenneth Wayne Friday of Del Rio. Friday’s vehicle was traveling southbound on State Hwy. 16 in the right lane. “He steered to the right to avoid a collision with vehicle two. Friday’s vehicle struck Palacios’ vehicle on the right shoulder,” DPS officials said.
The Palacioses’ next of kin were notified and their bodies were taken to Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home in San Diego. The Palacioses were both wearing seat belts.
Friday was transported to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital with chest injuries. He, too, was wearing a seat belt, DPS authorities said.
