The Longhorns opened the game by surprising Three Rivers with a successful onside kick. The offense moved the ball inside the 15 yard line before turning it over with a fumble. The defense then held the Bulldogs on downs. On fourth down, Holden Holm blocked the punt attempt and returned the ball eleven yards for a touchdown. Ty Jimmerson followed with his first of four successful PAT kicks. Marciano Sanchez continued the scoring in the second quarter with a two yard run. George West led 14-0. Three Rivers also scored in the second quarter on a three yard run by Rico Rodriquez and a thirty two yard field goal by Xavier Salazar. The first half ended with George West leading 14-9. Albert Gamez returned the second half kickoff deep into Bulldog territory and Sanchez scored the third touchdown of the night on a two yard carry. The Bulldog’s Rodriquez scored his second touchdown on a one yard run and the Bulldog’s two point conversion was successful, narrowing the Longhorn lead to 21 to 17. Cayleb Holt scored the final Longhorn touchdown on a one yard run with about seven minutes remaining in the game to bring the final score to 28 to 17 in favor of the mighty Longhorns.
Offensive leaders for the Longhorns were Shannon Taylor who rushed 18 times for 132 yards, Sanchez who had eleven carries for 77 yards, Chayson Holt who had four carries for 24 yards, and Cayleb Holt who had seven carries for 30 yards. Quarterback Colton Tindol had three rushes for 19 yards. He completed both pass attempts; the first was a screen pass to Cayleb Holt which lost six yards and the second on a crucial third down play was a 36 yards completion to Albert Gamez who had gotten wide open behind the Three Rivers secondary. For the night, the Longhorn Offensive Line cleared the way for 227 yards on 46 rushes and 17 first downs.
The Defense limited the Bulldogs to only 117 yards rushing on 32 carries and 104 yards passing on seven completions. Defensive backs Zane Schorp and Colton Tindol each had a pass interception to end Three River’s drives. Defensive linemen Walker, Taylor, Holm, Preece, McCabe, and Leal had outstanding games. Linebackers Lucas Yocum and Clayton Whitley also helped shut down the Bulldog running attack. Defensive backs Schorp, Tindol, Rosenbaum, Lopez, and Pipkin did a good job of covering receivers as well as providing run support.
The Longhorns now begin their playoff journey with a bi-district matchup again the San Diego Vaqueros this Friday night at Longhorn field. The Big Blue Wrecking Crew will be looking forward to great support from their loyal fans. Congratulations.
