The Skidmore-Tynan JV Bobcats traveled to Refugio last Saturday to play in the Refugio JV basketball tournament, dropping two contests.

The Bobcats first faced host Refugio. Skidmore-Tynan never got into a groove offensively and fell by a score of 40-23.

The Cats were doubled up on the scoreboard, 18-9, at the half and had to play from behind the entire second half.

Leading the scoring for Skidmore was R.J. Estrada with eight points. Jeremy Byrd, Jon Hernandez and Sterling McHorse each chipped in with four. Jeffrey Ortiz tallied two and Brandon Smith had one free throw.

The second game of the day also saw the Bobcats take on a district foe, this time Taft.

In a much more competitive game, the Greyhounds ended up winning, 43-29.

The Bobcats fell behind early, going into halftime down by 10. But, the Bobcats’ aggressive play got Taft’s two big men into foul trouble, which helped the Bobcats put together a strong second half.

Nathan Smith led the Bobcat scoring with nine points. J.D. White tallied six and Estrada tossed in four. Byrd and Ryan Scott each made three points. Jon Hernandez and Sterling McHorse each had two in the loss.

“The Refugio game was a little disappointing because we’ve played them before in a much closer game. In the Taft game, we tried a different defense to slow down their point guard, who is an outstanding player,” said JV coach Matt Harrington after the tournament.

“We were able to frustrate him and get him into foul trouble, which helped but it wasn’t enough. The guys played tough defense, made Taft earn every point and played hard, which you always like to see.”

The young Bobcats hosted the Kenedy Lions on Tuesday night and will travel to Taft on Friday night to begin district play with a rematch with the Greyhounds.
