The local ladies hosted the Victoria Home School Cobras and the visitors edged the Lady Eagles, 32-31.
The hometown Lady Eagles led after one, 11-8, but hit just one free throw over the second period to fall behind, 15-12, going into the halftime break.
The Pettus ladies regained the lead with a strong third period in which they outscored the Cobras 13-8 to take a 25-23 lead.
The final eight minutes were all about defense. Neither team broke into double digits and the Cobras took the final period 9-6 to overcome the Lady Eagles by one point.
Lindsay Parker and Shanon Mendez each had 10 points for the Lady Eagles. Chloe Garza contributed eight. Hailee Schauer hit for two and Simona Ramirez added one free throw.
“We played such a great game that the loss didn’t even discourage the girls from how well they played. The clock just ran out on us faster than we thought,” said Lady Eagle head coach Darcy Siddon.
Parker had a good night on the boards, pulling down 18 rebounds for a double-double effort and she also added four steals to her stats. Mendez worked hard on defense and piled up eight steals in the game.
“If we play like this the rest of the season, we should definitely secure a spot in the playoffs. We have Woodsboro on Friday (last night) and need to beat them to work toward our playoff goal,” said Siddon.
