• Vehicle sale turns
into theft
A 54-year-old rural resident turned her car over to a potential buyer of Portland for a test drive on Jan. 21, and the driver failed to return the truck, according to police reports.
The victim, called him when he did not return and he reported said he might be able to return in on Jan. 24.
The victim told investigating police officer Preston Haynes, according to his report, that he was only supposed to drive it around town.
When she threatened to file charges, he allegedly said “go ahead I will spend three hours in jail then be right back out on a $500 bond.
The vehicle was entered into the system as a stolen truck.
• Suspicious man seen with trap
Deputy Preston Haynes was dispatched to Alamo Street on Jan. 20 at 8:30 p.m. to investigate a report that a man was taking a trap from the back of a vehicle.
The suspect fled the property and was not located. The victim also reported that he had a weed eater and a lawn mower stolen in the past two weeks, which he did not report.
• Public intoxication
A 34-year-old Houston man was arrested on Jan. 12 after he failed a sobriety test.
Officer Enrique Dias stopped the driver on U.S. 77 for a speeding violation. During the stop the officer reported he could smell a strong odor of burnt marijuana emitting from the vehicle.
According to the officer’s report the male subject said he had just finished smoking a joint.
The officer reported the male subject had very blood shut eyes.
He asked if he was under the influence of marijuana, and the man replied that he was just a little high.
An eye test was performed on the subject and the officer determined the suspect was a danger to himself and others so he was taken to Refugio County Jail.
• Profanity written on office door
Deputy Preston Hayes investigated a report on Dec. 30 that a woman wrote profane words in the snow sprayed on the door for decoration at Refugio Memorial Hospital.
A video with the date and time of the incident was provided to the officer and a positive identification was made.
The female employee told the officer she wished to file disorderly conduct charges, according to the officer’s report.
• Wallet stolen at store
A 46-year-old Taft woman reported on Jan. 21, her wallet was stolen at 11 a.m. at a convenience store.
Officer Bill Schaefer was dispatched to Texas Star to investigate.
The victim said she had left the wallet on the counter and left the store. When she arrived home, she discovered her wallet was missing.
She returned to the store and the surveillance video was reviewed.
The video revealed three males subjects were seen in the store.
One of the males reached over the counter and took the wallet. All three males left the store.
The officer had seen the suspects earlier in the evening wearing the same clothes as shown in the video; however, the officer could not locate the suspects.
Charges will be filed and the three males will be served with a Notice to Bar Unwanted Guest.
• Items taken from
nursing home
Officer Jaime O’Reilly was dispatched to Swift st. to investigate a report of items taken from a female subject’s nursing home room on Jan. 19.
The female’s daughter stated that the items belonged to her deceased brother and that her father had no right taking these things.
A criminal trespass was issued.
• Disturbance reported
Officers were dispatched to a rural residence on Hwy. 202 after a 911 call was made.
The caller could be heard calling for help before the call disconnected.
The caller called back to report that her 82-year-old father had hit her with his cane and is now lying on the floor.
Medics were dispatched and the man was taken to Refugio Memorial Hospital.
