Bee, born in Charleston, S.C., in 1787 to a prominent family, arrived in Texas shortly after the Battle of San Jacinto. Bee served the Republic of Texas as secretary of the Treasury, secretary of war and secretary of state and was appointed by the Texas government as minister to the United States, where he negotiated with Daniel Webster and settled the formal treaty by which the United States recognized Texas. After Texas was annexed, Bee returned to South Carolina, where he died in 1853. Bee County and Beeville are named after Col. Bee.
In the business session, President Ann Chambless called the meeting to order and Diana Braly gave the invocation. After the pledges to the United States and Texas flags, Registrar Jane Pugh reported that four prospective members are currently in the process of completing their membership papers and Chaplain Diana Braly encouraged members to turn in their biographical information. President Chambless reminded members of their hostess duties, requested that e-mail addresses be added to the yearbook and corrected dates of future meetings.
Members voted to accept Patsy Lee as a transfer member from another DRT chapter, pending the completion of the necessary paperwork. The next meeting will be March 16.
Upon adjournment, members enjoyed lunch at The Cistern.
