Students of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School gathered Tuesday morning to honor the veterans of Bee County.
Principal Sarah Jaure said that the day was a “time to reflect, remember and honor those who have served in the United States armed forces.”
Brenda Blanar, who coordinated the ceremony, fought back tears as she talked about veterans.
These men and women, she said, “wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America up to including their life.
“That is honor.
“These soldiers made sacrifices so we can enjoy the freedoms we share in this land.”
Frank Gonzales, commander of the VFW Post 9170, told the students that many of the people they see volunteering their time in the community are veterans.
“We continue to serve because we love our country,” he said. “Many of us here at the VFW wear many different hats.”
Gonzales reminded the students that is because of the veterans that they are able to enjoy the things they do.
Freedom is something that must be defended, Gonzales said.
“I am here because so many (people) continue to serve,” he said.
Gonzales also reminded the students of the importance of an education.
“The teachers are the leaders. They are the ones that teach you to listen,” he said. “They are the ones that teach you how to learn...
“School is hard sometimes. Do not quit. Get up and do your chores and come to school.”
