Are you planning to vote for Bill White or Farouk Shami, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Debra Medina or Rick Perry for Texas governor?

Early voting in the March 2 Democratic and Republican primary elections began Tuesday (Feb. 16) and will continue until Feb. 26 at the commissioners courtroom at the Bee County Courthouse.

On the ballot are candidates in every race from U.S. representative to local justices of the peace.

Before you cast your ballot, familiarize yourself with the candidates and their stands on the important issues of the day, such as excessive government spending, taxation and how to manage their office more efficiently and cost effectively in these tough economic times.

One such opportunity avails itself on Monday, Feb. 22, when the Bee County Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a candidates forum, beginning at 6:30 p.m. inside the A.C. Jones High School lecture hall.

The public is invited, said Lisa Del Bosque, executive director of the chamber. She added that all candidates who want to represent Bee County at the local, state and national level have been invited to speak at the forum.

Most county contested races, including judge and commissioners, have made reservations to attend, she said.

Each candidate in contested races will be asked three questions posed by Coastal Bend College faculty which will have been drawn up at random so that no candidate will know which question he or she will be asked, Del Bosque explained.

As a community, we thank Del Bosque and the Chamber for providing this venue where voters can educate themselves about the candidates, their differences and abilities to think and speak on their feet.

Swarms of new primary voters are taking part in the early voting of this election, rendering recent polls unreliable. Could all these new voters be inspired by business-as-usual candidates or do they have something else in mind? Maybe the Glenn Beck flap alerted many to the fact they had a third choice. Should be interesting...
