Detective Eddie Garcia said police had not yet interviewed the drivers of any of the vehicles, but those interviews were scheduled to take place early this week.
The 7:30 p.m. crash sent 74-year-old Juan Flores of Beeville to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital with undetermined injuries.
Flores was still in the hospital’s intensive care unit Monday afternoon in serious condition. However, hospital officials had still not told investigators the extent of the man’s injuries.
Sgt. Chris Vasquez and Patrolman Matt Miller said they believe Flores was northbound on North Washington Street when his 1982 Chevrolet pickup was struck by the other vehicles.
They said there was a possibility that Flores might have been crossing the street from the Stripes convenience store and driving onto West Inez Street. But Monday afternoon, they were saying the evidence gathered at the scene suggested that he was northbound when his truck was hit by a 1999 Nissan headed south.
A 1994 Honda Accord apparently was traveling just behind the Nissan when it struck Flores’ pickup and it also collided with both vehicles.
Garcia said witnesses to the accident said the Honda and Nissan appeared to be involved in some sort of speed contest. But investigators had no solid evidence to back up those reports as of Monday afternoon.
The driver of the Nissan, Leland Kozar, 16, was taken to the emergency room at Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville along with three passengers immediately after the accident.
The passengers were said to be 18, 16 and 13 years old.
Also, the driver of the Honda, 18-year-old Shelby Nava, was taken to the emergency room.
Garcia said Flores had one passenger in his truck, a 49-year-old woman, who also was taken to the emergency room here.
All those who were taken to the emergency room were released later the same night, Garcia said.
The detective said three Highway Patrol troopers, Santiago “Jimmy” Montez, Richard Russell and Lyle Kram, assisted BPD officers at the scene.
