Ronnie Olivares is asking voters for their support and vote in the March 2 Democratic primary election for county commissioner, Pct. 4.

In his statement, he said, “I have enjoyed the challenges and rewards presented to me as your county commissioner for the past eight years. Although, I have been a public servant for Bee County for more than 30 years, working as your county commissioner, I find it very rewarding because I have a lot of wonderful hard working people in my precinct and in the entire county that working or helping them is very rewarding.

“As your commissioner of Precinct 4, I will continue to work collectively for the best interest of Bee County. I have the experience along with responsible leadership abilities that have contributed to a positive change for our commissioners’ court where I have been successful at controlling spending of your tax dollars. I am not just a commissioner, I am a public servant. I have the resources and knowledge to help my fellow man whenever needed.

“I have learned that being a county commissioner is more than just fixing roads or cleaning ditches, we have a unit road system that was established by our voters. The unit road system was established to save money and equipment. The unit road system has worked well. I am proud to say that in Precinct 4, about 99% of our county roads are paved and well maintained. As a matter of fact our neighboring counties cannot match the quality and workmanship of our county roads. I have even acquired three private roads that were in dire need of repair and turned them into county roads (following state statutes and county policy), thus helping the citizens with better road conditions and quality of life.

“I have worked closely with Tynan Water and Sewer Corporation during their transition of hiring a new manager by setting up town hall meetings and recruiting board members. Tynan was facing numerous fines and fees from TCEQ stemming from poor management of the prior manager. I spoke to our state representative, Yvonne Toureilles, and asked for her assistance in Tynan with their problems with TCEQ. I understand that TCEQ is now going to lower some of the fines toward Tynan Water Corporation saving thousands of dollars for Tynan.

“I was instrumental in bringing the Bee County Action Agency Head Start Center to Skidmore. The children benefitting from this have been found to do much better in school when they are given an early start. We were also able to utilize county property for the head start building at no cost to taxpayers.

“I operated and accepted responsibility of the coliseum and its grounds (at no cost to county) for two years, during the absence of a coliseum administrator. I oversaw the day to day operations that included all maintenance, bookings and supervising personnel, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars. I was nominated by a fellow commissioner to a state circulated magazine called the County Progress for my dedication to the county coliseum and to the needs of my precinct. I was awarded state recognition as “Going the Extra Mile” at a conference in Lubbock.

“I voted in favor of the $4 million grant to restore our courthouse. When the courthouse was finished, Commissioner Salazar and I advised the court that we could save thousands of dollars if we moved the courthouse belongings from the Perry’s building back to the courthouse ourselves. With my Peace Officer certification, I was able to utilize county inmates, along with coliseum staff and road and bridge personnel and moved all of the belongings of the courthouse from the Perry’s building back into the courthouse. It took us about one week but, we saved thousands of taxpayer dollars. We also saved $7,000 for landscaping at the courthouse by doing it ourselves, again with the help of coliseum staff, road and bridge staff and inmates from the sheriff’s office.

“I have been instrumental in obtaining $3,000,000 in grants for water and sewer yard line hookups, septic tank replacements and replacement of substandard housing in targeted areas which include

“I am an eight-year board member of the Coastal Bend Council of Governments, an active member of the Coastal Bend Peace Officers Association, a member of the 156th District Legal Aid Oversight Board, the director of Bee County Action Agency Rural Transit District, on the Law Enforcement Advisory Committee at Coastal Bend College, continue to maintain my Peace Officers License with a Masters Certification, on the Skidmore-Tynan School Health Advisory Board, a member of the Skidmore-Tynan Junior High Site-based Decision-Making Board, president of the Bobcat Little League Baseball in Skidmore, on the Bee County Expo Center board of directors, a member of Skidmore First Baptist Church, and a 30-year member of the Skidmore Volunteer Fire Department.

“I want my constituents to know that I have the experience, desire, commitment and knowledge to be the best commissioner for Precinct 4. I take pride in doing more by getting involved with my community and going above and beyond what is expected of a county commissioner. I will do whatever I can to help my fellow man. Consider these accomplishments and vote for ‘the right man for the job’.”
