The council had asked City Manager Tom Ginter to come up with some ideas for offering reduced fees for nonprofit organizations after a request was made earlier this month for reduced fees by the Beeville Chapter of Lions International.
Ginter’s recommendations called for a 50 percent reduction in rates for Monday through Friday rentals and a 30 percent reduction for Saturday and Sunday.
Councilwoman Libby Spires asked City Secretary Tomas P. Saenz if that should be changed. She wondered if the facility is rented more often on Friday than on Sunday.
Saenz answered that demand for Sunday rentals is greater than on Fridays.
Ginter explained that he was recommending higher rent reductions on weekdays to encourage more weekday rentals.
Spires also reminded Ginter to make sure the written policy requires proof that an organization requesting the reduced rent qualifies with the Internal Revenue Service as a nonprofit entity.
In other business, the council voted to:
— Approve a right of way agreement with Welder Exploration and Production Inc. for the installation of a four-inch gas pipeline across city property at the Beeville Municipal Airport.
— Approve signatories for the depository fund created for the St. Mary’s Street sidewalk replacement project.
— Agree to the purchase of a used pickup truck for the city sign department from Superior Auto.
— Hire attorney Phil McKinney to represent the city in an upcoming Civil Service personnel matter.
