Fire Chief Morris honored with 60 years service award

Members of the Beeville Volunteer Fire Department celebrated their annual Sweetheart Banquet on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the C.M. Smith Fire Department. Approximately 55 members and guests were in attendance.

Buddy Hardy led the invocation, introduction of the officers of the BVFD and led the blessing of the meal. The meal consisted of chicken spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and homemade desserts cooked and served by the Ladies Auxiliary.

After the meal, Helen Morris, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, introduced the officers of the Ladies Auxiliary. Donnie Morris, fire chief, followed with the presentation of the awards for the firefighters.

5 years: Richard Cathcart and Ray Polk

15 years: Jeff Hammond

20 years: Frank Castillo

25 years: Doug Holland

45 years: Ken Orrell

60 years: Donnie Morris

Attendance Award: Bill Burris

Outstanding Fire Fighter Award: Robert Doubrava

Bill Burris received the Attendance Award for attending 273 out of 300 fires, rescues, etc, between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009. The recipient for the Outstanding Fire Fighter Award was selected by the officers of the BVFD based on service, leadership, character and going above and beyond the call of duty while fighting fires and in general support of the BVFD.

Chief Donnie Morris was presented with his 60-year service award and pin by his wife, Helen Morris. During his acceptance, he recounted several fire fighting instances, rescues, and fire fighting competitions during his 60 years of service. He spoke of all the changes that he has seen over the many decades during his fire fighting career. He also thanked all his extended firefighter family for their many years of support and service.
