“Many of the wounded warriors will be on hand to meet everyone,” said Bobby Edwards, one of the original founders of Warriors Weekend. “Come out and meet the soldiers— I promise it will be a life-changing experience.”
An auction gets underway at 4 p.m. featuring fishing trips, items for motorcycle enthusiasts and much more.
The Texas barbecue will be ready to serve at 5 p.m. followed by a dance featuring J.R. Castillo. The dinner and dance are $12. The dance is $5.
“This Saturday, the people of Refugio County can show our wounded soldiers that they appreciate the sacrifice that they have given this country and all of us,” Edwards said.
The proceeds from this weekend will help fund Warriors Weekend in Port O’Connor that provides 250-300 soldiers who have been wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan with a weekend to get away from hospitals, therapy and the burdens of their injuries.
The soldiers are bused in, along with their families, for an expense-paid fishing trip, with entertainment, food and a host of encouragement from the area residents, fellow soldiers and school children who greet them and show appreciation for their service.
The Warriors Weekend is set for May 21 and 22 in Port O’Connor, which has the facilities to accommodate the soldiers. For more information, log onto www.warriorsweekend.org
