The Little Acorn Study Club met at the Three Rivers Dairy Queen on Thursday, March 18, with Judy Weber, Vice President/Cashier of First State Bank as guest speaker.

Although Weber is involved in many clubs and organizations, such as Lions Club and Garden Club, her presentation was on the Live Oak Development Corporation and fraud with relation to finances and banking.

She said the Live Oak Development Corporation deals with many issues including housing. Of late, they have discussed school consolidation.

The other topic Weber talked about was fraud with relation to finances and banking. With the economic situation as it is, fraud is prevalent. She said you should always look at your bank statements and be wary of telemarketers. “If something is too good to be true, then it probably is,” Weber stated.

She went on to say, “The ‘fraudsters’ are very slick. They use terminology to make you think they are legitimate. One way to avoid them is the Do Not Call Registry.”

Weber said you can go online to register up to three numbers or call them at 1-888-382-1222. However, if you have someone in assisted living, they have to go online to register the number at www.donotcall.gov. After you register your number, if you still have telemarketer calling you, then you can file a complaint.

“Be careful when shopping online. Don’t fall victim to pop-up ads; however, online banking is safe,” Weber said.

The banks’ “bill pay” feature is a safe way to bank; but beware of check scams. “We have had customers that have had their account numbers ‘scammed’. We have seen an increase in that activity. Spread the message. Let’s not give the fraudsters any ammunition,” Weber said in closing.

The Program Director for the March meeting was Glynda Matthews; hostesses were Lillie Mae Wieding and Joann Martin. They served chicken salad sandwiches, nutty cream cheese bars and lemonade from Dairy Queen.

In April, the study club will meet at Dairy Queen again. Madge Patton will be Program Director. Gladys Neal and Rita Arnst will be the hostesses.

In other LASC news, Anne Esse gave an update on Margaret Esse. She has Margaret’s address for those who want to send a card.
