A 70-year-old Robstown man was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville Friday afternoon after he was struck by a pickup truck near the H-E-B Food Store.

According to a report filed by Patrolman Jonell Cisneros, the victim was lying on the ground when he arrived at the intersection of South St. Mary’s and East Houston streets at about 4:30 p.m.

Police Chief Joe Treviño was at the scene along with Sgt. Stephen Phipps and Detectives Sam Abrigo and Chris Bernal when he arrived.

Cisneros said the victim was lying unconscious with blood coming from his nose and head when he saw him. EMS personnel from Angel Care Ambulance Service arrived and rushed the man to the hospital here.

The driver of the 1998 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, 74-year-old Desiderio Perez of Beeville, said he was sitting in the 100 block of South St. Mary’s at a red light. When the light turned green, he pulled onto East Houston Street and was facing the sun and could not see the man in the street.

Cisneros cited the driver for failing to yield right of way to a pedestrian.

The officer reported that the accident victim had no identification on him and he would not speak while at the hospital here. He later was transferred to a hospital in Corpus Christi for additional treatment and listed as “John Doe.”

However, on Saturday family members came to police headquarters to file a missing persons report and officers learned at the time that the victim had been 70-year-old Jose Maria Rodriguez of Robstown.
