Homecoming night in George West was an exciting time, not only for the victorious Big Blue Wrecking Crew and Queen Hannah Iley, but also for two special band members.

Each year the band members vote to decide which senior boy and girl will receive the honor of Band Sweetheart and Band Beau. This year’s lucky pair is Viviana Lopez and Winston Daniels. These outstanding young people lead very busy lives within their academic and extracurricular circles, while still being “nice guys” to everyone they meet.

Viviana’s most endearing quality is her kindness. Her positive attitude and warm smile make her tops among students and teachers. Her parents are Erlinda Lopez and Wallie Garcia. During marching band she plays flute, and plays the piccolo during concert season. She is a hard worker and wonderful example for the underclassmen in the band. Vivi, as she is known to her friends, hopes to pursue a career in anesthesiology or radiology. The band sweetheart said, “I live my life to my fullest ability, and do my best to make my mom proud. I don’t have a favorite memory from band; there are way too many to pick from.”

Winston is the son of Cesere and Kevin Graham, and his grandparents are Melvin and Mary Ann Daniels. While most know him as the band’s drum major, he plays the French horn. He has received the Director’s Award and is a Distinguished Scholar finalist. He received a 1 on his solo and was runner-up drum major in class 2A. Winston hopes to find a career on stage. He loves to put on shows for those willing to watch him perform, and if this doesn’t work out is interested in becoming a choreographer. He said, “My ambition is to succeed in life and to make my dreams a reality. One of the good memories that I will always keep close to my heart is marching competition in ’08. Just replaying that moment in my head when they announced our first division rating is something I’ll remember forever.”

These outstanding and talented students will be working hard to help the band earn first division ratings in their concert season. Their leadership and work ethic are vital to the Big Blue Band from Longhorn Land.
