Skidmore-Tynan ISD voters approved a proposed 6-cent tax rate hike on Friday.

Sixty-five percent of voters cast ballots in favor of the tax rate increase; 35 percent opposed it.

Results are unofficial until ballots are canvassed, however school officials reported late Friday that 218 residents who live in S-T ISD voted for the measure and 120 voted against it.

S-T ISD Superintendent Dr. Brett Belmarez said he views the passage of the proposed tax rate increase as a vote of confidence.

"I appreciate the message the voters sent to us tonight, that they like the job we are doing for our young people," he said.

Thank you Skidmore-Tynan citizens for your continued support! As a teacher that commutes to work, it never ceases to amaze me how supportive and encouraging the parents and community in general are to our students and schools. Thank you for taking the time to vote and continuing to support STISD. Also, Congratulations to our elementary school which took first place in our district UIL competition on Saturday ("Woohoo!").

How many bond issues has Beeville passed for new buildings and projects in the last 5-10 years? This community has voted to raise its taxes time and again including earlier this year.

I know several retired teachers who absolutely committed their lives to teaching but are now struggling in retirement. They felt in their situation that they couldn't afford higher taxes and had to vote against the Beeville hike.

It would appear the BISD just went to the well too many times in this case.

Congrats S-T ISD, it's nice to hear about a town that supports its schools and teachers. Maybe a few of you can come on over to Beeville and explain the importance of supporting education.
