The sub-varsity Trojan boys’ basketball teams played tough defensively on Tuesday night against the visiting Sinton Pirates to claim two wins.
The freshman boys won 38-21 and the junior varsity boys swarmed the Pirates for a 66-29 victory.
Each coach lauded their team’s defensive efforts in the victories. JV coach Abel Barrera commented, “Our defensive pressure was intense. It was nice to see every player play with an intense and determine effort.”
Freshman coach Scott Olivo had similar comments. “Our defense played well tonight. I thought it made the difference in the second half as we put pressure on Sinton that allowed us to extend our lead.”
In the freshman tilt, the Pirates and Trojans were locked in a close game through the first two periods. Beeville captured the first quarter 8-6 and both teams sank nine in the second period. That made it a 17-15 game going into the second half. The Trojans upped the defensive pressure and were rewarded with a 13-4 third to move into a 30-19 advantage over the Pirates.
The pace slowed somewhat in the final seven minutes but the Trojans limited the visitors to just one basket and two points while adding another eight to their total. It was a 38-21 victory as the young Trojans pulled away in the second half.
“It was our second straight victory that once again took total team effort. These young men continue to work hard every day in practice,” Olivo said.
Post Conner Shears led the Beeville scoring with 13 points. Brooks Holder followed with five. John Camacho, Preston Tabb, Dakota DelBosque and Frank Gutierrez all tallied four points. Peyton Tabb and Adam Aleman closed out the Beeville scoring with two apiece.
The JV contest had the Beeville boys out front the entire way. It was close, 17-12, after one period but the Trojans were on the right side of that score and just kept adding to their lead the rest of the way. Beeville was out front 29-19 at the end of the first half.
The JV boys but the game away in the third with their defense creating numerous Sinton turnovers and easy baskets for the Beeville squad.
“Sebastian Rodriguez and Ryan Vasquez led the backcourt with a hyped up defensive pressure and offensive attack. I hope our play in the last few games transfers over to the Nordheim tournament,” the coach said.
“With each passing practice and game, there is a stronger sense of team and commitment with the team,” Barrera said.
Beeville poured in 24 points in the third quarter while holding the Pirates to just six markers. It was all over at 53-25 going into the final seven minutes. The Trojans hit for 13 in the last period while the Pirates managed only four to make the final an easy 66-29 victory.
Four Trojans were in double figures in the win. B.J. Daye led the team with 15 points. Rodriguez followed with 14. Nick Waters had 11 second half points and Vasquez also hit for 11 points in the tilt. Chet Sparks added six tallies and Matt Garcia and Jon Silva recorded four each. Kevin Dang made two to complete the Beeville scoring.
The Trojan JV will compete at the Nordheim tournament this weekend while the freshman squad hosts a tournament of their own that began on Friday morning. The team will be split into two squads for the tourney but will be back together on Monday when they host the Tuloso-Midway Warriors.
The freshmen will start with a 5 p.m. tip.
