With an outnumbered team due to ACT testing, the Trojans ventured into the San Antonio Memorial tournament last weekend knowing that coming away with a win would be a difficult feat to accomplish. That did not stop the Trojans from working hard and running their plays.
“I am proud of the effort that the athletes are putting forth. Right now we are still trying to piece things together and the kids are doing a great job of pushing through and getting better,” said Trojan head coach Jesse Baez.
The Trojans opened the tournament on Friday with a contest against San Antonio Memorial. The Trojans played right with the Minutemen in three of the four quarters. Beeville held a 16-12 lead after the first quarter but a slow, cold second period proved to be too much to overcome. The Trojans added just eight points in the second stanza while the Memorial boys recorded 16 to take a 28-24 lead into the half.
The Minutemen added three more points to their lead in the third period by outscoring the Trojans 18-15. The teams played run-and-gun basketball in the fourth quarter. The Trojans poured in 26 points but the Memorial guys hit for 25 to earn a close 71-65 victory.
Eric Soza led the Trojans with 13 points, including three treys. Ysrael Barboza also hit for 13 points with one trey. Thomas Camacho was one of five Trojans in double figures with 11 points. Derell Jackson also hit for 11 in the opening round loss. Jordan Gonzales added 10. Camacho, Jackson and Gonzales all made good on one long-range jumper in the tilt. Vinny Garza contributed four points and Robby Horton made two. Adam Garcia closed out the Beeville scoring with one free throw.
The Trojans met Kennedy in their second game on Friday. The Rockets lived up to their name and came off the opening tip blazing. Kennedy put up 22 points in the first period and another 23 markers in the second quarter. The Trojan offense was smothered and managed six tallies in the first and another 10 in the second period. The Rockets held a commanding 45-16 lead at the half.
The Trojans rallied in the second half to close the gap a little but the final was still a 67-47 win for the Rockets.
Camacho led the Beeville scoring with 16 points. Soza, Barboza, Horton and Gonzales all recorded six tallies. Jackson added two as did Garza and Clayton Tindol. Johnny Dang hit one free throw.
Saturday’s two games had the Trojans going up against the McCollum Cowboys and Jourdanton Indians. Three players were missing on Saturday, taking care of academic testing and the Trojans played hard but were no match for the Cowboys or the Indians.
McCollum rode away from the Trojans with a strong shooting performance in the first half. It was a 47-28 game at the intermission and the Cowboys added 14 more points to their lead in the second half to capture a 76-43 win.
Gonzales led the Beeville scoring with 11 points. Barboza added nine. Matt Botella chipped in with six markers. Garcia followed with five. Jackson hit for four points in the loss as did Ryan Vasquez. Kevin Blanton and Garza were held to two apiece.
The game with the Indians was a bit closer, but Jourdanton got off to another hot start against the Trojans, hitting for 22 in the opening eight minutes. The Trojans managed 14 in the first but found themselves trailing by eight going into the second quarter. They cut into the lead by four points by capturing the second period 14-10 over the Indians. Jourdanton regained its shooting touch with 30 second half points while limiting the Trojans to 24. The final went to the Indians by 10, 62-52.
Gonzales had 15 to lead the Trojans in scoring. Dang followed with nine. Barboza sank six as did Garcia. Jackson hit for five while Tindol and Garza both added four. Botello had three to complete the JHS scoring.
The losses bring the Trojans’ record to 2-10 on the season.
Beeville entertained the Tuloso-Midway Warriors on Monday night and will travel to Mathis on Friday evening to play the Pirates.
The freshman contest will tip off at 5 p.m. with the JV and varsity contests to follow.
