The Beeville freshman boys basketball tournament drew six teams and the Victoria Vipers ran off with the title but the Trojan Orange squad battled to a third place finish.

The opening round matchup had the Beeville White team meeting the Floresville Tigers. The game could not have been much closer. The Tigers had a one-point lead, 8-7, after the first period and that went to a 13-11 halftime margin. The two teams each scored six points in the third period to keep it at a two-point spread going into the final seven minutes.

The Trojans got just one point back by capturing the fourth quarter 7-6, but the Tigers held on for a 25-24 win.

Frank Gutierrez led the Beeville scoring with seven points. Brandon Lucio and Lonnie Jordan followed with six apiece. Jerad Garcia hit for three in the loss and Adam Alema closed things out with two.

The second game of the day had the Beeville Orange team facing off against the Pettus Eagles.

The Trojans took command early with a 9-4 lead after one period. The Eagles got their scoring up in the second period, hitting for 10 points but the Trojans tacked on another four to their lead and it was a 23-14 margin at the half.

A defensive battle ensued in the third quarter. The Eagles got the better of it, 6-5, to make it a 28-20 game. The Trojans found their shooting eye and poured in 15 points over the final stanza while holding the Eagles to eight. The final was a 43-28 win for the Beeville Orange.

John Camacho led all scorers with 17 points for the Trojans. Preston Tabb added nine markers while Dakota DelBosque hit for eight. Brooks Holder had five tallies and Conner Shears completed the Beeville scoring with four points.

Grayson Huskey led the Pettus scoring with seven points. Tim Gill hit for six points while AB Escamilla added five. Rob Guzman contributed four as did Ulises Juarez. Chris Guerrero finished the scoring with two.

Victoria’s boys earned their first victory with a 54-42 win over the Floresville Tigers in the third game of the day.

The Mathis Pirates had their way with the young Pettus Eagles 60-28 in game four. Game five had the Vipers pitted against the Beeville White squad. The Victoria boys ran away with a 65-25 victory. Gutierrez had 12 points for the White squad. Jordan ended the game with seven markers and Aleman closed out the Beeville scoring with one three-pointer.

The final game of the day had the Trojan Orange team facing the Mathis Pirates. The Trojans dressed only six players for this tournament on their Orange team and the numbers game was a tough one to overcome with the Pirates. Their squad of 15 just kept coming at the Trojans in waves. Beeville trailed 12-6 at the end of the first period. It was a 26-17 contest at the half with the Pirates still ahead.

The Trojan comeback never materialized as the Pirates owned the third period 19-11 to take a 45-28 advantage. The Trojans fought hard and cut seven points off the lead but it wasn’t enough. The Mathis Pirates earned a 57-47 win to advance to Saturday’s championship game against Victoria.

Beeville scoring had Shears with 15 in the loss. Preston Tabb hit for 10. DelBosque added nine while Camacho hit for seven. Holder recorded four tallies and Peyton Tabb had two points.

Saturday’s first game had the Pettus Eagles playing the Beeville White team. The Eagles jumped out fast and led the Trojans 14-1 after one period. It was a 26-15 game at the half as the Trojans began to find their shooting touch. A 12-6 third period had the Eagles expand their lead to a 38-21 margin. The Trojans added eight points while the Eagles struck for 10. The final had the young Eagles on top by the score of 48-29.

Escamilla led the Pettus scoring with 13 points. Rob Gonzales followed with 10. Juarez came in with nine points. Huskey added six tallies. Tim Gill and Guerrero both hit for three while Alex Dumont and Taylor Yeoman tallied two each.

The Trojans got 10 points from Jordan. Lucio followed with eight markers. Gutierez hit for six while Aleman had four. Garcia completed the Beeville scoring with one point.

The third place game placed the Beeville Orange team against the Floresville Tigers.

It was a game that really tested the mettle of the Beeville boys. The short numbers were a detriment as the team finished with just four players on the floor for most of the fourth quarter due to foul trouble.

The Trojans were hot from the opening tip and blazed their way to a 15-5 lead after just one period. The Tigers got things going in the second period but the Trojans outscored Floresville 15-13 to take a 30-18 lead into the half.

The Beeville Orange would need all the lead they could get as the fouls started to mount in the second half. The Tigers kept the pressure on and worked hard on defense to force the Trojans into turnovers. Floresville captured the third period 11-7 and cut the lead down to eight points, 37-29.

Beeville coach Scott Olivo lost two players to fouls and resorted to a diamond defense to try and hold off the surging Tigers. Floresville cut the lead to just one point on three different occasions late in the fourth but DelBosque always seemed to have an answer for the Tigers. A basket or free throws by DelBosque kept the Trojans in the lead down the stretch. It was a 43-42 game with just a few seconds left to play. DelBosque calmly hit both ends of a one-and-one situation. A Tiger turnover gave the ball back to the Trojans. A quick Floresville foul put the Trojans back at the charity stripe with a chance to extend their lead and secure the win, but with 1.06 seconds left the Beeville shooter missed the front end of the one-and-one situation. The Tigers fired up one last shot from beyond mid-court that fell short and the Trojans earned the 45-42 victory for third place.

Beeville was led in scoring by DelBosque with 15 points. Shears and Preston Tabb followed with eight apiece. Peyton Tabb hit for six points as did Holder. Camacho finished with two to complete the scoring.

The Mathis Pirates ran past the Victoria Vipers 65-40 to win the title game late Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans faced Tuloso-Midway on Monday night and will be in Mathis on Friday night to meet the Pirates in a rematch. The freshman game will begin at 5 p.m. in Mathis with the JV and varsity games to follow.
