It went down to the last second before a winner could be decided, but it took an Alonzo Carreon basket at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 52-51 victory over the stunned Yellowjackets.
The two teams battled to a 16-16 tie at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles then took control of the pace and emerged at the halftime break with a 33-28 advantage.
Pettus added four more points to their lead during the third period and it was a 46-37 game going into the final eight minutes. The Yellowjackets then began their comeback. The home team outscored the Eagles 14-6 over the next seven plus minutes but left just enough time on the clock (1.43 seconds) for the Eagles to inbound the ball and put up a last second shot.
Trailing 51-50, Eagle McKinzie Torres passed to an open Carreon, who fired up the desperation shot and it fell through the net as the buzzer sounded. The final went to the Eagles 52-51 over the Yellowjackets.
Andrew P. led the team in scoring with 19 points. Carreon finished the night with 16. Joe Jefferson followed with seven. Hunter Tomlin added four. C.J. Gill, Michael Perkins and Reyes Cruces added two apiece.
The Eagles played the Stockdale Brahmas on Friday afternoon. The Eagles will play the Pettus “old-timers” on Monday at the annual alumni contest at 7 p.m., before taking a break for the holidays.
