The Lady Trojans opened District 30-4A play with a disappointing 50-29 loss to the Ray Lady Texans on Tuesday night.

The state’s 20th ranked girls basketball team played under control and exhibited a tough offense with some good shooting touches as they dismantled the Lady Trojans over the four quarters of play.

Ray led 18-11 after the first period and moved in front 28-16 by the halftime buzzer. The Lady Trojans never got into double figures for a quarter the rest of the night after their opening period of 11 points.

The visitors outscored the home team 22-13 in the second half to coast in for a 50-29 victory. The Lady Texans slowed things on offense for much of the second half, content with running the clock and working for a layup or a wide-open jumper.

“The girls played hard and improved tonight. The mistakes made tonight can and will be fixed,” said Lady Trojan head coach Greg Gonzales.

“The good thing is that they are new mistakes and which mean we are still getting better.”

The Lady Trojans did not get anyone into double figures. Hillary Hennig hit for eight points and Erin Tabb followed with seven. Cassandra Vela sank four as did Brandy Perez. Shanise Wilson, Melanie Chargualaf and Chelsea Contreras recorded two points apiece in the loss.

The Lady Trojans traveled to Gregory-Portland on Friday night to meet the Ladycats. The Beeville girls will then take a break for the holidays and be back in action on Dec. 29 at the Sinton Lady Pirates tournament.
