The final scrimmages before the regular season are set for this week for the Pettus, Skidmore-Tynan and Beeville football teams.

The Eagles will meet the Bobcats and the Aransas Pass Panthers at Bobcat Stadium at 5 p.m. in a three-way scrimmage on Friday for their final look before opening on Aug. 27.

“Skidmore and Aransas Pass will both be tough on Friday. It’s always challenging to play schools in bigger classifications, but that’s one good way to get our team ready for the road ahead, too,” said Pettus head coach Steve Marbach.

“If we can keep up with the 2A and 3A guys, we should be able to compete well with the teams in our 1A district.”

The Bobcats also will test their squad against the 3A Panthers. Coach Dan Garza’s squad is learning a new system and will be looking for Sonny Hernandez to quarterback their run-oriented offense behind a very big offensive line this year.

The Trojans will travel to Orange Grove on Thursday evening with the sub-varsity teams starting things off at 5 p.m. The varsity Bulldogs and the Trojan varsity should be on the field at 7 p.m.

Trojan head coach Troy Moses will again be looking at several running backs to see who can and will step up to the starting positions.

All three county teams begin regular season play in Zero Week. The Aug. 27 date will have the Trojans hosting Kingsville at the newly refurbished Veterans Memorial Stadium. Skidmore-Tynan will play host to the Odem Owls while the Pettus Eagles will venture to Shiner to tackle Shiner St. Paul. All three games are set to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
