Raul “Rudy” Garcia filed Thursday morning to run as a write-in candidate for the office of Precinct 2 county commissioner.

Garcia, running as an independent, will face Dennis DeWitt in the Nov. 2 election.

DeWitt won the Republican nomination for commissioner of Precinct 2, defeating longtime incumbent Susan Stasny.

He does not have a Democratic opponent in the general election.

DeWitt retired as director of the community affairs department earlier this year following allegations that he made racially disparaging remarks to two people while serving the county.

Garcia said that he doesn’t intend to bring up the past accusations made against DeWitt in his campaign.

“I plan on running a clean campaign,” Garcia said. “All I want the people to know is what I bring to the table.

“I don’t think the color of our skin is going to matter.

“I hope they can look at what Dennis can contribute to the job and what I can contribute to the job.”

Garcia owns Affordable Insurance in Beeville. “My skills in communications and customer service have contributed to my success as an independent small business owner,” Garcia wrote in his announcement in running for office.

Garcia is a supporter of both Western Week and Fiesta Bee County. He is also the founder of Toys for Bee Kids, a charity that has presented gifts to the needy children of Bee County and surrounding area before Christmas.

Deadline to file with the county judge’s office as a write-in candidate is 5 p.m. Tuesday.
