The match went three games with the visitors capturing the win but all three sets were close and the taller Goliad girls prevailed, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-23.
“We’re getting tougher. They girls are making adjustments on defense and offense which is a big plus on the court,” said head coach Gracy Bryce.
“The ladies are working harder to cover the floor. These ladies are starting to step it up.”
In the first set, the Lady Trojans worked their way to a 7-3 lead. Goliad then got rolling and outscored Beeville 8-4 over the next 12 points to tie things up at 11-11.
The scoring went back and forth with Beeville’s J.J. Hernandez and Brennan Holder getting kills late in the game.
It was still close late as the teams were all knotted at 20-20. The Tigers scratched for a final run and captured five of the last seven points for a 25-22 opening victory.
In set two, the Lady Trojans had to fight back from an early deficit as the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 7-2 lead. The Beeville girls earned points on the serve of Randi Maupin and Kristen Almeida to pull back close and tied things up at 8-8 on a Holder kill.
The Lady Trojans went on to lead at 12-9 but the visitors ran off a string of five straight points to take the lead they never relinquished. Goliad captured set two, 25-20, for a 2-0 lead in the best of five match.
Set three was a battle all the way. Neither team could shake off the pursuit of the other. The biggest lead was a 5-2 Tiger advantage early but neither team led by more than two points the rest of the way.
It was a seesaw affair with the Lady Trojans holding a 23-21 lead late and looking at a possible set four. The visitors decided to postpone those thoughts, capturing the final four points of the contest to earn a 25-23 victory for a 3-0 match win.
Holder got five points off her serve on the night as Almeida finished with four points on her serve. Maupin led the Lady Trojans with three kills and seven blocks on the defensive side. Holder added two kills and led the defense with nine blocks against the Tigers. Hernandez had one kill and six blocks.
The Lady Trojans played at home on Tuesday night against Calallen. Play began with the freshman taking the court at 5 p.m. This weekend will have the Beeville girls competing in the Seguin tournament.
