Fourteen members of the Diabetic Support Group viewed a DVD on the “Basic Skills for Controlling Diabetes” at Refugio Memorial Hospital during the groups meeting on Monday, Sept. 20.

The film gave newly diagnosed patients the survival skills and confidence they need to start managing their diabetes right away, while they continue to learn about self-management.

Covered in the film were healthy food choices, monitoring blood glucose, also called blood sugar, physical activity and medications. These skills are presented as the key to managing type 2 diabetes and preventing possible complications.

Handouts were also distributed for “Injury Prevention for September, which is “Focus on Healthy Aging Month,” which include Men and Women: Stay Healthy at 50 + Healthy Aging, Protect your skin from skin cancer.

Verna Jones, RN, MSN, put together notebooks that members were able to take home with diabetic information. Del Amador, LVN, went over the information in the notebook.

A brief discussion was held after the presentation, including asking for volunteers for the upcoming health fair.
