Nominations for the 2010-2011 Gifted and Talented program are being accepted at Pettus Elementary. Students must be nominated and tested prior to joining the G/T program. Nominations are due no later than Friday, Oct. 22. Letters, informing parents/guardians of nomination procedures, were sent home with students who are currently in grades kindergarten.

Typical characteristics of a Gifted and Talented student include expression through oral means as well as written means; curiosity about how things work and are made; creativity in more than one area; questioning of reasons; leadership abilities; good character; sense of humor; persistence until job is accomplished; an adventurous spirit; ability to see things and ideas in new and different ways; enjoyment of being mentally challenged; the ability to be a quick thinker; ability to organize; and a consistent high level performance in school. Students nominated should demonstrate a majority of these characteristics.

Nominations may be made by a parent, teacher, or anyone with knowledge of the nominee’s abilities. Testing of those nominated for the Gifted and Talented program will begin after Nov. 1. For additional information, contact Betty Matus, Pettus Elementary counselor, at 375-2296, ext. 167.
