Marines celebrate 235th birthday

A celebration to honor the 235th birthday of the United States Marine Corps will be held Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 4:30 p.m. at the Texas Marine Medal of Honor Memorial in Town Green Park, The Woodlands.

The birthday celebration this year will honor the Marines of the 1st Marine Division.

It was John Adams in 1787 that said, "We ought not fight them at all, unless we determine to fight them forever!" Know the occasion? U.S. Marines were going to what would be referred to .."the shores of Tripoli" in the Marine Corps Hymn. They would defeat the Barbary Pirates who were Muslim slave traders and ship stealers, attacking civilian merchant shipping on the coast of North Africa.
