Part of the Furgason Bravo! Series, the world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra will get you “In the Mood” with its renditions of the greatest big band hits of the World War II era. The concert will feature classic favorites such as “Tuxedo Junction,” “Moonlight Serenade,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo” and “Little Brown Jug.”
Glenn Miller was one of the most successful dance band leaders of the era, working with Benny Goodman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Gene Krupa and other great artists. He formed his original orchestra in the late 1930s and produced a series of radio broadcasts in addition to appearing in the films “Sun Valley Serenade” and “Orchestra Wives” in the early 1940s.
A matchless string of hits sustained his popularity even after he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in October 1942, and created the 50-piece Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. Miller was flying from Britain to France to make arrangements for a concert when the plane in which he was a passenger disappeared over the English Channel on Dec. 15, 1944.
By popular demand, in 1956, the Miller Estate authorized the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra. Today, the 19-member band plays around 300 concerts a year, performing many of the popular Miller arrangements while also playing more modern selections in the big-band style, carefully selecting only those newer tunes that lend themselves naturally to the Miller style and sound and appeal to audiences of all ages.
