George and Ira Gershwin are two of the most successful songwriters in American history. Their songs — many instantly recognizable — are part of the patchwork of America’s story. Songs such as “Summertime,” “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Someone to Watch Over Me” are not only classic Gershwin songs, they’ve become classic American standards.

Now the music, story and history of the Gershwin brothers take center stage again in ’SWonderful — an all-singing, all-dancing musical review featuring five mini-musicals based on the real-life events in and around the Gershwin brothers’ lives.

’SWonderful will be performed at 8 p.m. Feb. 16, in Jones Auditorium at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The event is free for students. Individual tickets for non-students are $8 and can be purchased through JavelinaTickets.com.

The performance is part of the A&M-Kingsville Presidential Performing and Visual Arts Series.

’SWonderful is the first new Gershwin musical since 1992. The 90-minute performance features 42 Gershwin songs. The mini-musicals reflect the nine decades since the Gershwins’ music became popular and focus on different tales of young love.

The Presidential Performing and Visual Arts Series is a year-long program of art, music and theatre performances that bring culture and variety to Kingsville for faculty, staff, students and community audiences. The intention is to bring a new element to learning outside the classroom for students, as they are entertained and educated in venues they might not normally visit. Community members are welcome to continue lifelong learning by attending these events and interacting with our students. For more information, call 593-2769.
