The Rialto Theater has announced that it will be conducting the annual Children’s Summer Theater Workshop July 18-23, from 9 a.m. to noon each day for ages 6-18.

A registration fee of $50 will be required for each participant. The workshop will be conducted in the theater annex (the building next to the Rialto Theater) in downtown Beeville.

Alex Garza, a former drama instructor at Coastal Bend College for more than five years, will be a guest teacher. In the past, Garza has presented a one-man show for children in Beeville. While teaching at CBC, he directed a number of productions, including several for young audiences, and was the drama instructor during CBC’s Summer Kid’s College Program.

As an actor, he has toured with several professional theater companies, including Austin’s Zachary Scott Theatre Center. He is also a successful playwright, has received recognition for his work and has had one of his plays produced during the state theater convention. He is currently teaching drama at Dilley High School in Dilley.

The children’s theater workshop will be designed to build self-confidence on the stage. The children will learn some of the basics of the theater such as positions of the stage, body positions, projection of the voice, pronunciation and body language.

The children also will be instructed on simple makeup and costume design. The workshop will also emphasize the importance of teamwork and working as a group. The children will rehearse a short play during the week and will present it for friends and family on Saturday, July 23, at 10 a.m.

Registration forms for the Children’s Workshop may be picked up at Hogue’s Jewelry, 202 N. Washington St. in Beeville.

This week of the Rialto Theater Children’s Workshop has been partially funded by the Joe Barnhart Foundation.
