She attended W.B.Ray High School, where she graduated in 1953. Rita worked at Grunwald Printing Co. for a number of years until she left in pursuit of her dream home on Lake Corpus Christi near Mathis in 1988, where she developed her love of bird watching.
Rita met her husband of 55 years, Carol, in the spring and was later wed on June 15, 1956. Carol and Rita often spent their time traveling the country, both for military reasons and personal pleasure. As a Lady of a Shriner with the Al Amin Shrine Temple in Corpus Christi, Rita dedicated most of her time and efforts helping the Director Staff in their many endeavors. Rita and Carol there met most of their life-long friends, who shared their love of playing poker and traveling.
Rita also spent much of her time chasing her creative muse. She would often be found cooking, painting, sewing, crocheting, flower arranging and doing ceramic work.
Those who welcomed Rita to her final home in Heaven include her mother, Allie Lorene (Walker) Lumry; her father, Bonnie Bert Kellum; her step-father, Roy E. Lumry; along with her beloved pets, Lucky and Sweetheart.
Rita’s memories will be cherished by her loving husband, Carol Paul Remel Sr.; her two children, Joy Lynn (John) Burkhardt and Carol Paul (Judy) Remel Jr.; and by her pride and joy, her granddaughter, Allie Marie Burkhardt. Rita is also survived by her two brothers, Burt A. Kellum and William W. (Pat) Lumry, III; and a sister, Loretta Faye Lumry. A host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and cherished friends will continue to keep the memory of her vibrant life alive.
Memorial services were Saturday, September 24, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Christi Bay Temple, 1314 S. Alameda Corpus Christi, Tx.
