Royal Caliche Red will be scored on his conformation, reining ability, working a cow and roping. James O’Brien will be showing him in the competition. The auction will immediately follow the contest.
“This gelding was raised on the ranch, and he has been working cattle in the pasture and we have been roping on him. I have had him in my barn for the last four and a half months teaching him to work a cow a little more and putting a handle on him,” James O’Brien said.
The scholarship will be given through www.PerformanceRanchHorses.com, a web site that features O’Brien Ranch horses.
“We want to give people an opportunity to learn more about our horses through the web site,” O’Brien said.
The scholarship amount will be 10 percent of sale price of Royal Caliche Red.
“The last couple of years, our horses have averaged around $5,000,” O’Brien said. “We have put a lot of work into this horse, so we hope that the selling price will enable us to give more to the scholarship this year.”
The scholarship will be given to an applicant that wants to pursue a career in agriculture vs. having to declare a major in agriculture. The student can declare an ag major, but is not restricted to one. The recipient will be chosen from students from Refugio, Bee and Goliad counties.
“We would like to see kids in the area go and pursue a major that they are passionate about, then come back to South Texas and make the ag industry better,” O’Brien said. “Both my wife and I had scholarships, and we would like to help kids out the same way we were helped out.”
Interested students can get an application at www.PerformanceRanchHorses.com/scholarship. They will be required to submit the application along with a cover letter and two letters of recommendation. Deadline for the applications is April 3. The recipient will be announced May 1.
