Twelve A.C. Jones High School choir students, who entered the region UIL solo contest, held in Victoria on Saturday, Feb. 7, earned first division ratings.

Of the 13 who competed, 11 will advance to the state contest, which will be held at the University of Texas in Austin, on June 1.

One student received a first rating after singing a class 2 solo; and another student earned a second division rating, but qualified for the state contest by virtue of his first class rating on a guitar solo.

The students who will go to the state contest are seniors Kristal Perez, Courtney Taylor, Yvonne Alaniz, Matt Ortega, Victor Hinojosa, Joe Gomez and Tim Shane; juniors Juan Gonzales, Chelsea Salinas and Jessica Maness; and sophomore Claire Duge.

Also receiving a first division medal for a class 2 solo was Janel Gutierrez, sophomore. Although he had a second division rating, senior Paul Dancer had a first division rating for his guitar solo, thereby qualifying for the state contest.

Director Everett McAulay said this was probably the finest showing of any group of A.C. Jones vocalists since he has been at the school these last nine years. He said that credit should be given to Pat Coffee in coaching these students.

Their judge was retired choral director Cheryl Marshall from Boerne High School, who now lives in Kerrville. Marshall commended the singers from A.C. Jones on their preparation and vocal prowess in her comments to the students.
