Coastal Bend College’s seventh annual Día Del Mariachi Vocal and Group Competition will be held on Saturday, March 7, at the Selena Auditorium in Corpus Christi. The event showcases the mariachi programs of South Texas middle and high schools. It also gives students the opportunity to see what other youth programs are doing.

“The best young talent in South Texas will take the stage,” said Juan Jose Sanchez, an instructor at Coastal Bend College. Sanchez works with area school mariachi directors to bring 23 bands together for the annual event. “The competition will be phenomenal.”

Coastal Bend College’s Día Del Mariachi and Munoz Public Relations from San Antonio have teamed up to bring Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, “the world’s best mariachi,” to the event. The overall vocal and group winners in the competition will join the headliner in a Saturday concert at 7:30 p.m.

The mission of Día Del Mariachi is to recognize mariachi music excellence; develop young artists with Hispanic cultural understanding; inspire a spirit of pride and unity in the communities of South Texas; and introduce everyone to Coastal Bend College’s educational opportunities. The event is designed to provide students with college information, fellowship and stage experience. Admission into the competition is free. Group and vocal competitions start at 8:30 a.m.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students considering a musical career. We want to show that there are options for them in college to study and hone their musical abilities,” Sanchez explained. “Many high school students are not aware of the opportunities to study band, ensemble and individual instruction at many higher education institutions in Texas.”
