If you live at the apartments between the Wal-mart and A.C. Jones, you can hear music in the morning. If you have, it’s the A.C. Jones Mariachi practicing outside the band hall. “During the process of learning and memorizing a song, students need to get out of their comfort zone, the class room,” said band director Jaime Vela. “Their instruments and voices sound differently depending on their surroundings. We try to practice the concept that music is more than what is on paper, its performance, confidence and expression. Things that no one can express in paper form.” This Monday, Dec. 10, the Mariachis will perform a pre-concert about 6:35 p.m. before the high school band Christmas concert. “We will be debuting the Jazz Band, come back at 7 p.m. and then the concert band and symphonic band.” The concert is free and open to the public. On Dec. 11, the Moreno Mddle School bands will hold their Christmas concert at 7 p.m.
The Mighty Trojan Band has been selected to perform the National Anthem for a San Antonio Spurs basketball game on Dec. 28. In September, the band submitted a video of the band to the San Antonio Spurs organization. The band was qualified and selected to perform at home game.
“Other bands, choirs and singers submit their recording to the organization,” said Trojan band director Jaime Vela. “Not all are accepted, and not all have the availability to be present at the game they are selected for. Dec. 28th is kind of a bad day, because of the holidays; however, the band would miss out on a wonderful opportunity to perform on the court of a national and professional event. The band students and I (that are SA Spurs fans) will be a little nervous having to perform just feet away from Duncan, Parker, Ginobili.”
The game will be televised, and there is a slight chance that the band will be seen playing the national anthem.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the band and for Beeville,” added Vela. “We’re here to make A.C. Jones, Beeville and our community of friends and family proud.
“We hope to make this a yearly event for the band, to put excitement in being a student of the band organization. Members of Col. Lovely’s JROTC will be presenting the United States and Texas flags also.”
