Guadalupe was a World War II Veteran, Private First Class Sergeant, Rifleman in the 9th Infantry Division. He served 7 campaigns, North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium, Germany, Normandy and Algeria. Guadalupe was honored with three Purple Hearts, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the American Defense Medal.
Most memories Guadalupe spoke of was brief encounters with General George Patton during his stay at the U.S. Army Hospital. General Patton went to visit G. Almendarez as he was recovering from his wounds. It was there that he shook General Patton’s hand. He was “a mean guy.” He was really tough recalls Almendarez.
Survivors include one son, Eloy Almendarez; two daughters, Yolanda Lynch (John) and Frances Almendarez all of Skidmore, TX; two adopted daughters, Esther Starr (Keith) of Euless, TX. and Vickie Canala of Houston, TX.; three brothers, Aurelio Almendarez and Martin Almendarez both of Skidmore, TX. and Porfino Almendarez (Amelia) of Houston, TX.; two sisters, Dora Gonzales of Skidmore, TX. and Soila Del Bosque (Mardano) of Houston, TX.; two grandsons, John Patrick Lynch, Jr. and Correy Allen Lynch (Brittany Kopplin) all of Skidmore, TX..
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 1, 2009 from 10:00am-9:00pm with a rosary held that evening at 7:00pm at Angelus Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, April 2, 2009 at 2:00pm at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church-Skidmore, TX. with Father Sebastian Thomas officiating with music by Fernando Cisneros. Interment to follow with military honors at Evergreen Cemetery-Skidmore, TX.. Pallbearers include John Patrick Lynch, Jr., Correy Allen Lynch, Joseph Alcorta, Andres Del Bosque, Manuel Del Bosque and Santana (Sandy) Lopez. Honorary pallbearers are Antonio (Tony) Almendarez and Keith Starr.
