Mary Joyce Goodwin Kelly, 81, from Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away September 28, 2013, in San Antonio, Texas. Born in Beeville, Texas, on October 10, 1931, to Winifred Cecelia Stephenson Goodwin and James Francis Goodwin, II. Mary was one of seven children and was raised in Live Oak County. She graduated from George West High School and attended Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. While attending Our Lady of the Lake, Mary met the love of her life, John Kelly, through her college suite mate, Betty Kelly Zuberbueler from Comstock, Texas. Mary and John married on June 16, 1951 and had five children.

Mary was active in many different organizations while living in Corpus Christi. Some of those include being a founding member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society at St. Pius X, Order of Sultanas, Nueces County Republican Women, Mardi Gras Ball, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Gussetville Cemetery Association, Seven Arts Study Club, The Irish Cultural House, Corpus Christi Cathedral Concert Series and was a Member of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Throughout her life, Mary dedicated herself to family, friends and those in need. She was a pillar of strength to all five of her children, family members and relatives. Mary was one who would go out of her way to help her beloved ones. Her greatest joy in life was attending loved ones and friend’s life events. Not often missing a party, wedding or funeral. Mary loved being surrounded by everyone she met and loved in celebrating life to the fullest. Often, family members would have to patiently wait while she said her good-byes, being the last one to leave an event. One of the many gifts she gave her children was the value and importance of keeping them in touch with their extensive family. Coming from an early South Texas pioneer family, she would often express to her children, “you be good because we are related to everyone in South Texas and I will hear about it”. And she was correct about that, for we quickly found out how accurate that statement was. Her greatest gift, however, was the gift of faith, love and devotion to Our Lord and God. Mary was a dedicated wife, Mother and friend always being a positive influence on many lives. She was a kind, generous and loving person, an inspiration to all who knew her. Mary will be greatly missed and has been terribly missed since her suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Winifred Cecelia Stephenson, James Francis Goodwin, II, sister, Patrice Ann Goodwin, brother, William Charles Goodwin, her husband, John Harold Kelly, Sr. and great grandson, Maxwell Lee Horne. Also, brothers-in law, Johnny Zuberbueler, Patrick William Kelly, Jr. and Robert Hender Kelly.
