Mr. Mata was born on Jan. 10, 1936, in Beeville to Luis and Victoria (Santellana) Mata. He was a retired ranch hand for the Wicker Ranch where he worked for 45 years. He was a Catholic.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Carlos Mata; a brother, Monsies Mata; and three sisters, Elena Grimaldo, Sylviana Aguirre and Dominga Cardenas.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Aleman Mata of Beeville; two sons, Luis (Maria) Mata and Ricardo Mata of Beeville; two daughters, Leti Mata and Lydia Mata of Beeville; a sister, Elodia Dominguez of Dallas; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A rosary was recited Friday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home.
The funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at St. James Catholic Church with Father Balaswamy Pasala officiating. Interment followed at Our Lady of Victory Cemetery #2.
Pallbearers were Ricardo Mata, Luis Mata, Leti Mata, Lydia Mata, Selena Moreno, Rosana Mata Alvarez and Esmeralda Tapia.
Honorary pallbearer was Luis (Gordo) Mata.
