The recipient of the Joe Barnhart scholarship will be announced Friday during a lectureship at Jones high.

The scholar award is presented to a full-time junior at A. C. Jones.

The finalists are Levi Draper, Jessica Maness, Sadie Rodriguez and Stacey Rossow.

The lectureship begins at 9 a.m. in the auditorium.

The purpose is to encourage superior students to excel and to contribute to the world in areas of civics, religion, the arts, humanities, business and other professions.

This year’s guest speaker is Dr. Juan Castro.

Dr. Castro was born in Mexico and raised in Brownsville since the age of 15.

He earned his undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Texas and received his medical degree from Texas A&M University College of Medicine in 1988.

His medical work has been done in the South Texas area.

He is currently an assistant professor at the College of Pharmacy at Texas A&M Health Science Center in Kingsville.

He also works with the Coastal Bend House Call Program and sees uninsured patients at AMISTAD Community Health Center in Corpus Christi, for which he was the founding board chairman.

Dr. Castro has long been in public service; he has served as team physician for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders and for three high schools: Miller, Carroll and Ingleside. He has been a soccer coach, has served as a judge for community events and is a frequent guest speaker in his and surrounding communities.

One of his future goals is to improve the access to quality health care for the uninsured in the Coastal Bend area.
