Mr. Fitzgerald was born Sept. 30, 1932, in Wharton County at the home of his parents, Gladys Marie (Smith) and Luther Fitzgerald Sr. He married Lorine Marie Kunzon Dec. 30, 1951, at St. Rose Catholic Church in Schulenburg. He worked for Holmes Drilling Company, in cotton fields and various other places and bought a café on the Fayette County line. He also worked for Bill Dirks in Tuleta as a pumper until 1974. While in Tuleta, he was president of the Pettus Booster Club and also coached Little League for 17 years.
He moved to Newcastle, Wyo., in 1974, where he worked as a pumper in the oilfields, and also bought Wild Horse Charlie’s Grocery Store and ran it for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking and barbecue.
He was preceded in death by his son, Bill Fitzgerald III; his grandparents; parents; four brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lorine Fitzgerald; three sons, Donald (Debbie) Fitzgerald of Purdon, Franklin (Michelle) Fitzgerald of Casper, Wyo., and Calvin (Sandy) Fitzgerald of Blooming Grove; two daughters, Kathy (Mike) Bartsch of Cody, Wyo., and Brenda (Loyde) Harper of Parachute, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Glendan (Smokey) Schmidt of Victoria.
A rosary was recited at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Wade Funeral Chapel in Hubbard by Deacon Denver Crawley.
The funeral service was conducted Saturday, Feb. 22, at 10 a.m. at Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Penelope.
Pallbearers were Eric Bartsch, Tim Bartsch, Brent Jones, Brock Jones, Darian Rainey and Justin Herod.
Honorary pallbearers were Josh Harper, Terik Harper, Brody Jones and Wyatt Herod.
