The Dance Studio had two entries—a solo performance and group performance—in last weekend’s regional dance contest, which is held by Show Stopper at Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio every year.
Jessica Urquizo, 17, the solo performer, competed Saturday at 9:10 a.m. in the Jazz Soloist category and came home with a gold for her routine to “Like A Flag.”
The team of Urquizo, Pearl Martisek, 10, Evelyn Martisek, 13, and Danielle Layug, 12, competed Sunday, March 30, at 10:09 a.m. in the small group tap category and also placed first and took home a gold trophy. The girls performed to “Breathe In, Breathe Out,” a Christian hip-hop song.
Urquizo has trained with Kathy and James Taylor at The Dance Studio for three years now and has been a company member for nearly a year with the Corpus Christi Ballet.
Danielle Layug started training nine months ago when she moved to Beeville in June of last year with her family.
Pearl and Evelyn Martisek have been training for nearly three years at The Dance Studio and have earned featured solos in both the spring and Christmas productions.
This was the girls’ first time participating in a competition.
They will also be performing their routines for the First Baptist auction on Friday, April 11, at 7 p.m. and also in The Dance Studio’s spring production “Timeless” this coming May 17 and 18 at the Gertrude R. Jones Performing Arts Theater on the Coastal Bend campus. Tickets are available at The Dance Studio at 414 N. St. Mary’s St., or at the door the day of the performance.
