Mrs. Martinez was born Feb. 22, 1925, in Mercedes to Nicanor Garcia and Mercedes Mena Garcia. She was a retired employee of the Skidmore-Tynan ISD Cafeteria and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department in Skidmore, the Altar Society of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and PTA. She enjoyed playing softball while in school, cooking, sewing and taking care of her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicanor Garcia and Mercedes Mena Garcia; her husband, Domingo Martinez Sr., four sons, Jose, Jose Angel, Jesus and Juanito Martinez; two daughters, San Juanita “Janie” Godines and Juaquina “Jackie” Franco; a brother, Juan Garcia; and a sister, Elisa Reyna.
Survivors include her daughter, Josefina Martinez of McAllen; a son, Domingo (Bertha) Martinez Jr. of Skidmore; two daughters-in-law, Bernave “Beva” Martinez of Corpus Christi and Micaela “Mickey” Martinez of Minnesota; a son-in-law, Arturo Godines of Alice; two brothers, Margarito (Evangelina) Garcia of Houston and Nieves (Dorotea) Garcia of Sinton; one sister, Beatrice Garcia (Alfredo) Montalvo of Arlington; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at Treviño Funeral Home. A rosary was recited there that evening at 7 o’clock.
The funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, April 21, at Immaculate Conception Church in Skidmore with Father Zenon Konowalek officiating.
Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ernesto Perez, Domingo Martinez III, Lonnie Franco, Jacob Martinez, Bernardo Jesus Godines, Gabriel Martinez and Larry Martinez.
Honorary pallbearers were all her grandchildren.
