Irene Christine (Nelson) Chessher, 94, of Pettus, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014.

Mrs. Chessher was born May 10, 1919, in The Colony to Mertle Davidson and Charles O. Nelson. She married D.L. Chessher on Dec. 7, 1937, in Beeville. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Pettus.

She was preceded in death by parents; her husband in 1978; siblings, Madge Borchers, Richard Nelson, Marie Shifflet, Laura Lee Jenson and Carl Nelson.

Survivors include her sons, David Lee (Brenda) Chessher Sr. and Charles Edward Chessher; grandchildren, Kenneth Chessher and David Lee Chessher Jr.; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Audrey Murch.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, April 22, at 10 a.m. at Beeville Memorial Park with Vernon Andrews officiating.

Irene was a ball of fire. In the day she was also a great telephone operator. If you needed someone she would search and find them. A little short lady with great stature. I remember when she bought the last Buick, you've heard of the little old ladies from Pasadena who could hardly see over the steering wheel. She will be missed.
