A group of Beevillians joined together with friends from Houston last Saturday to participate in the 17th annual M.D. Anderson Sprint For Life 5K.
The team, dubbed “Merry Smiles,” gathered in memory of Merry Beck, who passed away from ovarian cancer on Dec. 27, 2013. Merry was known to many for her bravery, as she battled cancer for 22 years, but she was even more memorable for her ever-present smile and bubbly personality.
Sprint for Life is an event hosted once a year by MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Department of Gynecological Oncology and Reproductive Medicine to raise money for the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program. Since 1998, runners, walkers and contributors alike have raised more than $4 million from the 5K alone.
The Merry Smiles team had 35 participants and raised more than $5,000 for the program. Though this was the first year a team representing Merry was involved in Sprint for Life, the group only hopes to grow in size and plans to make it a tradition of honoring her every year at this event by raising money for other women fighting this disease.
