To help families comply with recent immunization changes, Skidmore-Tynan ISD, in cooperation with the Texas Department of State Health Services, will host an immunization clinic, Wednesday, June 9, in the Skidmore-Tynan board room. Immunizations will be provided from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m.

This clinic will give parents the opportunity to update their student’s immunizations conveniently in Skidmore. Parents must accompany a minor child. Bring immunization records.

Changes in Texas immunization requirements have been made recently and approved by the Executive Commission on Health & Human Services.

The changes to the requirements were made in order to update the Texas elementary and secondary school immunization requirements so that they adhere more closely to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The changes are as follows:

Hepatitis A Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten will be required to have two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine.

Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten will be required to have two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Varicella Vaccine: All students entering kindergarten and 7th grade will be required to have two doses of varicella vaccine. A written statement from a parent (or legal guardian or managing conservator), school nurse, or physician attesting to a child’s positive history of varicella disease (chickenpox), or of varicella immunity is acceptable in lieu of either dose of varicella vaccine.

Tetanus, Diphtheria and acellular pertussis-containing vaccine (Tdap): All students entering the 7th grade will be required to have one (1) dose of Tdap only if it has been five years since their last dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine. Students in grades 9-12 are required to have a booster dose of Tdap if it has been 10 years since their previous dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine. Td is acceptable in lieu of Tdap if a contraindication to pertussis exists.

Meningococcal Vaccine: All students entering 7th grade will be required to have one dose of meningococcal vaccine.

Immunizations updates will need to be taken care of prior to the beginning of the 2010-11 school year.

Any questions or concerns that you might have should be directed to Barbara Seger, R.N., District Nurse, Skidmore-Tynan ISD, 287-3426, ext. 3016.
