Joe C. Penney, 81, of Belton, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, in a Temple hospital.

Mr. Penney was born Nov. 26, 1928, in Marathon, to Joe C. and Hazel (Carter) Penney. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany with the 2nd Armor Division “Hell On Wheels” as Sgt. 1st Class. He married Jean Underwood on May 12, 1951, in Austin and worked for seismograph companies as crew chief and surveyor. He was the county surveyor of Bee County for 14 years and also worked for the Army Corp of Engineers for 13 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and traveling. He was a Master Mason for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Penney of Belton; a daughter, Nancy Jo Penney (Jimmie L.) McDonald of Morgan’s Point Resort; a son, James M. Penney of Huntsville; a sister, Helen Farve of Beeville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Burial will be in Refugio at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Dossman Funeral Home in Belton.
